THE NUTCRACKER has been since 1892, a classical Christmastime ballet. In Youri Vamos’ staging, which had its premiere in 1988 in the Opera Bonn, the original story based on E.T. A. Hoffman’s »The Nutcracker and the Mouse King« is fused with Charles Dickens’ »A Christmas Carol«. There is more to this production than simply celebrating Christmas.

By combining the two well-known plots, Clara and the Nutcracker Prince have an antagonist: the gruff old miser Ebenezer Scrooge. He is a pushy, cold-hearted oddball who scoffs at and loathes Christmas. He goes so far as to fire on Christmas eve his clerk Bob Cratchit. Bob cannot give his little daughter Clara her much-desired Christmas present, a nutcracker doll. That same night Scrooge is tormented by horrible nightmares. The next morning, he is a new, more caring man…

This NUTCRACKER promises to be a colorfully staged ballet evening with yuletide splendor and stage magic for all generations.

Vámos’ production is back 36 years after its premiere, without having lost any of its fairy-tale-like charm. The company was last on tour in Bonn in 2022 with ROSSINI CARDS.
