Angela Gheorghiu

Angela Gheorghiu returned to the Royal Opera House last season as Mimì LA BOHÈME, the role with which she made her international debut on that stage in 1992, followed by debuts for the Vienna State Opera and Metropolitan Opera. Highlights for the Royal Opera also include Violetta LA TRAVIATA, when for the first and last time in television and operatic history, the BBC cleared its schedule to broadcast the opera live. She sang at the house’s re-opening gala in 1999 and marked 30 years of performing there in 2022 as Tosca.

Appearing at the other leading opera houses and concert halls globally, Gheorghiu’s repertoire also includes Juliette ROMÉO ET JULIETTE, Nedda PAGLIACCI, Adina L’ELISIR D’AMORE, Amelia SIMON BOCCANEGRA, Magda LA RONDINE, Marguerite FAUST, Micaëla CARMEN, Liù TURANDOT, Charlotte WERTHER and title role ADRIANA LECOUVREUR. Her many gala concert and recital performances include a recent appearance with London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Gheorghiu recorded extensively for EMI Classics/Warner Classics and Decca, and has received numerous international artistic honours: La Médaille Vermeille de la Ville de Paris, Chevalier and Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the Nihil Sine Deo decoration from King Michael I of Romania, the European Cultural Award for Music, the Victoire d'Honneur Award and multiple Gramophone awards. She won the Female Artist of the Year at the Classical Brit Awards twice.

Gheorghiu sang at the Queen Elizabeth II Golden and Diamond Jubilee celebrations at Buckingham Palace, for Pope John Paul II at Castel Gandolfo, at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert, at Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in the presence of Queen Sofia of Spain, and at the Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands Silver Jubilee Gala in Amsterdam.
